Malaya / Umbalite Garnet
Last updated: April 2026
Malaya (or Umbalite) garnet is a pyrope-spessartite solid solution from the Umba River Valley of Tanzania and Kenya, prized for its peachy orange-pink to red-orange color with vitreous to adamantine luster.
Malaya / Umbalite Garnet has a specific gravity of 3.75 and a refractive index of 1.730–1.780, with a Mohs hardness of 7.0–7.5. It is singly refractive.
Physical & Optical Properties
Measured with a polariscope, a refractometer, a hydrostatic balance, a Chelsea filter, a UV torch, a loupe, a darkfield loupe and a spectroscope — step-by-step for each.
Through the refractometer
Drawn from the refractive index above, on a 1.40–1.81 scale. How to take this reading.
Through the polariscope
Drawn from the optic character and transparency above. A polariscope separates singly refractive, doubly refractive and aggregate; the optic sign needs a conoscope. How to take this reading.
Specific gravity, and what it rules out
Drawn from the specific-gravity range above, against every other species in the table. How to take this reading.
Through the dichroscope
Drawn from the pleochroism above. Two windows that match mean either no pleochroism or the wrong angle — turn the instrument to tell. How the dichroscope compares.
Key Differentiators
- Peachy orange-pink color unusual in the gem world — distinct from orange sapphire and padparadscha
- Isotropic (SR) — no birefringence, no pleochroism; padparadscha sapphire is birefringent (DR)
- High RI (1.730–1.780) places it above most garnets except andradite
- Mn absorption bands visible in spectroscope (spessartite component)
- Variable composition: RI and SG shift with pyrope/spessartite ratio
- Moderate magnetic response — pyrope/spessartite/almandine components all contain paramagnetic Fe²⁺ or Mn²⁺
Common Simulants
- Padparadscha Sapphire: Sapphire is birefringent (DR, uniaxial negative), RI 1.762–1.770, SG 3.99–4.01; much higher SG and RI than Malaya garnet; strong pleochroism (orange/pink).
- Orange Sapphire: Uniaxial negative DR, RI 1.762–1.770, SG ~4.00; birefringent (0.008); pleochroic orange/yellow-orange. Higher RI and SG distinguish from Malaya garnet.
- Spessartite Garnet: Same species family but pure spessartite is more orange and has RI 1.790–1.815, SG 4.12–4.18; higher RI and SG than Malaya/pyrope-spessartite mix.
- Hessonite Garnet (grossular): Grossular garnet, RI 1.730–1.760, SG 3.57–3.73; typically more orange-brown; roiled 'heat-wave' treacle inclusions; lower RI and SG than Malaya.
- Orange Glass: Isotropic but SG 2.3–4.5 variable; gas bubbles and swirl marks under loupe; low thermal conductivity (warm to touch); no Mn absorption bands.
